Launching third‑party applications
BIRT report developers can create links on text, charts, and images in a report, enabling you to open other BIRT reports, or launch third‑party applications on your mobile device. BIRT Viewer HD supports using links in BIRT reports to launch third‑party applications. BIRT Viewer for mobile supports using links to open other BIRT reports containing additional information.
Links to third party applications are essentially URI (Uniform Resource Indicator) schemes that open applications installed on your mobile device. For example in a simple report listing customers and their contact information, the customer name can contain a link, which when selected launches a report containing order information for that customer. Native iOS applications installed on an Apple mobile device can also launch from a link. For example, if the customer phone number in the example report contains a link, selecting it can launch the phone application and call the selected number.
A link can support multiple actions. Tap and hold the link to display a menu containing available options. For example, you can use a phone number to make a phone call, to send a text message, to add the number to a contact list, or to copy the number. Tap the link to use the default action. The default action for a phone number on a mobile phone device is to call the number.
Additional examples include selecting a zip code in a report to launch a map application, selecting a link to a video that launches a video player, and selecting a hyperlink to launch a specific browser displaying the associated web site.
